I am looking for personal care for a Man

Hourly pay rate:

£16 per hour

My son is a happy and playful young man, he enjoys the outdoors, activities and listening to music. He likes to play with balloons and has a great sense of humour.

This is a rewarding and vital role to support my 20-year-old with severe autism - at home or during outings - it is as much about companionship as providing support. We are a supportive and proactive family and believe in the benefit of holistic therapies. We have a wealth of experience with autism and beneficial therapies, we use a range of techniques which supports our son and these has proven benefit to him.

My son is non-verbal and needs to be watched to ensure he doesn’t eat non-food items. Full training and support will be given and there would be an extended period of familiarisation where the PA and my son will gradually get to know each other while I’m around.

Applications welcome from Brazilian Portuguese speakers as this is my mother tongue, I’m fluent in both English and Brazilian Portuguese.

Duties include:

  • Other relevant duties as required
  • Eating and drinking assistance
  • Bathroom assistance
  • Dressing / undressing
  • Housekeeping
  • Cooking

  • On occasion to support me with bathing my son.
  • Using the toilet – assist to clean and dress as needed after use, and prompt him to wash hands.
  • If needed - assist with dressing and undressing/helping with buttons and fastenings
  • Helping with other aspects of personal care as required, for example assisting to get changed in swimming pool/gym.
  • OT and SALT exercises
  • Accompany and assist when accessing social and leisure activities, including to swimming, the gym, park, cinema, local visits, attending social events, attending therapies and disability group, walks in the parks or the woods, visiting friends etc.
  • Supporting with safety in and away from the home, near roads etc.
  • Accompany to doctors/hospital appointments if required
  • Whilst on duty at the employer’s home, watching TV, listening to music, playing games e.g. balloon and hide and seek etc.
  • Monitor for eating non-food items.
  • Be aware of triggers or early warning signs, acting accordingly to reduce/manage this behaviour – full support and training will be provided

  • Car owner and driver – desirable but not essential
  • Previous experience working with SEN adults or children is desirable
  • Calm and reassuring manner

  • Experience of working with SEN children or adults is desirable
  • Car owner/driver desirable but not essential. We have off-street parking, and a blue badge for use while out and working with my son.

Please note, if you are successful in your application for this position you will be employed directly by the individual employer and not Independent Lives. Successful applicants will be entitled to Holiday pay and will be issued employment contracts.
