New legislation to allow a wider range of healthcare professionals to certify fit notes has been introduced by the government to ease pressure on GPs.
From 1 July 2022 nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists are all able to legally certify fit notes.
If your employee has been off work with illness for more than seven days, a fit note provides evidence about their absence and any relevant advice on how you can support them to remain in or return to work.
When is a fit note needed?
If your employee is off sick for more than seven days, you should ask for a fit note (or Statement of Fitness for Work). They are sometimes referred to as medical statements or a doctor’s note.
To work out the number of days that your employee has been sick, you should count all the days in a row, including weekends and any bank holidays, even if they wouldn’t normally work at those times.
